The members of the House of Representatives Committee on health has paid a working visit to Maiduguri, Borno State's capital on Monday.

They were at the city to assess and evaluate health concerns in the state.

The delegation was led by Magaji Amos Gwamna, the committee chairman.

According to the chairman, the exercise is focused on two key areas, assessing immunization status in states with high numbers of zero-dose children, and evaluating the release and utilization of the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund.

The case of children that have never received any routine immunization, Amos said, is a matter of urgent national concern.

He also noted that the visit is also part of their ongoing legislative oversight on critical healthcare delivery issues across the country.

The lawmakers were seen visiting several health facilities within Maiduguri.

The team also paid a courtesy visit to Alh. Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Al-Amin El-Kanemi, the Shehu of Borno.

Similarly, the lawmakers witnessed a groundbreaking healthcare intervention by Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, UMTH, where he donated N1 billion to support kidney transplants.

In a statement posted on his Facebook page, the committee chairman commended Governor Zulum for the intervention, while reaffirming his committee's commitment in supporting initiatives that transform lives and strengthen the healthcare system.

'This powerful gesture is more than financial aid, it’s a lifeline for the most vulnerable and a true reflection of leadership rooted in compassion and vision,' he stated.

During the event, UMTH commissioned several projects in the hospital, including the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Medical ICT Centre, Interventional Radiology Unit, Prof. Jibril Aminu Heart Centre and Stroke & Neuroscience Centr,also named after the Shehu of Borno.

Other projects are Amb. Babagana Kingibe MRI Unit and Linear Accelerator, donated by Chief Emeka Offor.

The event brought together several national leaders and stakeholders, including Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, Minister of Health, the Shehu of Borno, Amb. Babagana Kingibe, and Dr. Didi Walson-Jack (HOSF).

Others present are members of the National Assembly and heads of federal tertiary hospitals among others.
