The Federal Government’s cash reward of ₦200,000 to Yobe teenager Nafisah Abdullahi, who won the prestigious TeenEagle Global Finals, has sparked mixed reactions across social media.
While many Nigerians praised her achievement, others expressed disappointment at what they described as a “meagre” gift compared to the scale of her accomplishment.
Some questioned whether the amount was actually in naira or dollars, with one user commenting, 'I think it was a slip of tongue; maybe it’s $200,000. The money confuse everyone.'
Others mocked the reward, pointing out its inadequacy in today’s economy.
'That money isn’t enough to buy one bag of rice and a bag of beans,' one person wrote, while another quipped, '200k for what?! Is it for garri, or agbado, or eba?'
Comparisons were also drawn with how entertainers and athletes are rewarded.
'Even Portable fit give more than this,' one commenter joked, while another noted, 'Super Falcons received over 15 million each for winning the Women’s AFCON. This girl deserves far more.'
A few, however, saw the gesture as an improvement on past government attitudes toward education.
'They even try. Before nah 10k, while winners of BBN smile home with millions,' a user remarked.
Beyond the jokes and criticisms, many Nigerians emphasized that Nafisah’s brilliance deserves greater recognition and investment.
'If she drops her account number, Nigerians will show her love,' one supporter said.
The debate reflects long-standing concerns over how Nigeria values education compared to sports and entertainment.
As one commenter put it: 'Education in this country, you’re on your own — better go for skills.'
