Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has approved over N730 million in scholarships for indigenes studying in various institutions across the country.

The cheque was formally handed over on Monday to the Borno State Scholarship Board by the Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Engr. Lawan Abba Wakilbe, during a ceremony at the ministry’s Quality Assurance conference hall.

According to Wakilbe, the scholarship will cover 26,888 indigenous undergraduates, with payments to begin immediately.

He noted that Zulum’s administration has already spent over N8 billion on scholarships in 2024 alone, supporting students both within Nigeria and abroad.

The commissioner urged students to verify their bank details to avoid failed transactions, warning that unclaimed funds would be redirected.

He also encouraged beneficiaries to embrace opportunities offered through NELFUND and called on student leaders to maximize available resources.

Reacting on behalf of the students, the National President of the National Union of Borno State Students (NUBOSS), Abdullahi Ahmadu Umara, expressed appreciation to Governor Zulum for his continued investment in education.

One of the student representatives, Abba Ali Abba Gana, further disclosed plans to honour Zulum with the title of “Student-Friendly Governor” and Wakilbe as the “Architect of Modern Education” for their roles in advancing education in the state.
