The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has launched a Network of 32 Youth Peace Champions (YPCs) to promote peace and reconciliation in Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe States.

The YPCs, equipped with skills to promote peacebuilding and protect children, will work to transform community peacebuilding and protect children in North-East Nigeria.

'It is an honour to join you all today celebrating the official launch of the Youth Peace Champions Network in North-East Nigeria.

This initiative, supported by the UNODC through the End Violence Against Children (ENDVAC) programme, represents a symbol of hope for our communities,' said Barma Shettima, commissioner of youth, sport and community development from Yobe State.

The launch, attended by commissioners from Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa States, marked the beginning of a new chapter in community peacebuilding and child protection.

The YPCs will develop their own work plans, advocate for peace, and lead initiatives to protect and uplift children.

'This network, supported by UNODC, is more than just a platform: it is a movement, driven by the passion and resilience of our youth, who are dedicated to creating a better and safer future for all,' said Zuwaira Gambo, commissioner of women affairs and social development from Borno State.

The initiative, supported by UNODC's End Violence Against Children (ENDVAC) program, recognizes the potential of young people to effect change in their own communities.

The YPCs will work to prevent child exploitation by armed and criminal groups, promote rehabilitation and reintegration, and prioritize the protection, support, and reintegration of child victims of grave violations.

'We will work hand in hand with UNODC and other partners to provide the necessary resources, guidance, and opportunities for our youth to succeed,' Shettima added.

Abba Ali Yarima Mustapha, national project manager, ENDVAC who spoke on behalf of the UNODC country representative said 'this initiative is a testament to our dedication to empowering youth and children as agents of change and their own protection.'
