In commemoration of World Polio Day 2024, United Nations Children's Fund, (UNICEF) has launched a song titled 'No More Zero-Dose' to emphasize the importance of routine immunization for children in North East Nigeria.

The song, featuring Nigerian and international superstars, aims to boost vaccination rates in the region and encourage parents to protect their children against childhood diseases like polio, measles, and tetanus.

According to Dr. Gerida Birukila, UNICEF Chief of Maiduguri Field Office, zero-dose children are those who lack access to or are never reached by routine immunization services.

The key drivers include health-related issues, caregiver factors, cultural and geographical factors, and insecurity.

Dr. Birukila said that the Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS 2023) reports that only 40.3% of children in North East Nigeria are fully vaccinated, while 26% remain unvaccinated.

In Borno State, 28.5% of children are fully vaccinated, while 21.2% have no vaccination, she added.

Dr. Birukila explained that, to address this, UNICEF has implemented several strategies.

'The organization has provided advocacy support to the government, pushing for increased funding for health and immunization activities.

'UNICEF has initiated targeted zero-dose intervention across prioritized Local Government Areas (LGAs).

'UNICEF has also facilitated integrated campaigns focusing on underserved communities and community engagement with traditional and religious institutions.

'Furthermore, the organization has ensured vaccine availability across all 27 LGAs and provided capacity building and training support for skilled health workers to deliver quality immunization services,' Dr. Birukila explained.

To improve the situation, Dr. Birukila recommends continued efforts in several areas.

'Firstly, advocating for increased government funding for health and immunization is crucial.

'Secondly, improving community engagement and creating demand while addressing vaccine hesitancy is essential.

'Thirdly, strengthening data systems and enhancing supply chains will help prevent vaccine stockouts.

'Lastly, addressing access issues in security-compromised and hard-to-reach locations remains critical,' Dr. Birukila recommended.

The 'No More Zero-Dose' song, available in Hausa, aims to become a popular anthem promoting vaccination in North East Nigeria.
