Governors from the Lake Chad Basin region have concluded their 5th Forum meeting in Maiduguri, Nigeria, adopting a series of resolutions aimed at consolidating peace, security, and sustainable development.

The forum, themed 'Rebuilding the Lake Chad Basin: Consolidating gains, commitment to peace, cross-border cooperation, security, and sustainable development for a resilient community,' was attended by regional leaders, international partners, and key stakeholders.

The governors commended the efforts of Lake Chad Basin countries, regional institutions, and international partners in fostering stabilization, peacebuilding, and sustainable development.

They also welcomed the adjusted Regional Strategy for Stabilization, Recovery, and Resilience (RS SRR) and urged its endorsement by the LCBC Council of Ministers and the AU Peace and Security Council.

The governors acknowledged the significant contributions of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in combating Boko Haram and ISWAP, which has led to a reduction in terrorist threats and increased civilian protection.

They emphasized the need for continued efforts to completely eliminate these groups. To achieve this, the governors committed to strengthening support for the MNJTF and investing in transborder security.

They also recognized the need to neutralize remaining non-state armed groups and combat illicit trade of arms and drug trafficking.

The forum expressed concern over the humanitarian situation in the region, exacerbated by climate change, economic challenges, and natural disasters.

They stressed the need to protect vulnerable populations, particularly women and children, and address the negative impact of the suspension of donor support for Niger's National Window of the Regional Stabilization Facility. To address these challenges, the governors committed to scaling up climate resilience initiatives and environmental protection.

The forum also emphasized the importance of promoting cross-border trade and economic connectivity through improved infrastructure and the establishment of 'Free Trade Zones.'

Furthermore, the governors recognized the need to strengthen collaboration with traditional rulers and civil society. They also committed to promoting cross-border trade and economic connectivity, improving infrastructure, and strengthening resource mobilization through the Special Multi-Partner Delivery Fund (SMDF), the Nexus Funding Facility (NFF), and other funding initiatives.

The next meeting of the LCB Governors' Forum is scheduled to take place in the Republic of Niger in 2026.
