The African Cities Research Consortium (ACRC) has launched an urban development project focused on empowering women and vulnerable groups in Maiduguri.
Led by CEO Diana Mitlin, the ACRC is working to address the often-overlooked challenges faced by urban residents, particularly women and people with disabilities.
At a press briefing held on Tuesday at the NUJ House Maiduguri, Mitlin shed light on the organization's ongoing project in Maiduguri, one of 12 African cities selected for the initiative.
The project aims to support the city in addressing the challenges of rapid urbanization, particularly in terms of land titling and ownership.
Mitlin emphasized the importance of empowering women, who are disproportionately affected by displacement and rapid urbanization.
'We are working to create awareness among women that it is perfectly acceptable to own land and have it titled in their name,' she explained.
According to her, the ACRC is willing to sponsor women in land titling their properties, provided they cooperate with the organization.
She said the project, which began in 2020-2021, is divided into three phases. Maiduguri is part of the second phase, which focuses on implementation.
Mitlin added that the ACRC is working closely with the Borno State Government, BOGIS, and security agencies to ensure the project's success.
She noted that the project focuses on key urban development domains, including housing, which is a critical aspect of urban planning.
She revealed that the ACRC is also working to establish formal settlements, which will help to address the issue of informal settlements and slums.
Additionally, the project is addressing land and connectivity, recognizing the importance of well-planned infrastructure in promoting economic growth and development.
Furthermore, the project is focused on structural transformation, neighborhood and district economic development, youth and capability development, health, wellbeing, and nutrition, as well as safety and security.
By addressing these key domains, the ACRC aims to create a more sustainable and equitable urban environment.
Mitlin acknowledged the critical role of politics in shaping the urban development agenda.
'We recognize that politics plays a crucial role in shaping the urban development agenda.
'We are committed to working with the Borno State Government and other stakeholders to ensure that our project is aligned with the state's development priorities and goals,' she explained.
The project's findings and recommendations are expected to inform policy decisions and urban planning strategies, ultimately improving the lives of urban residents in Maiduguri and beyond.
