As part of activities marking International Women’s Day 2025, 3,000 vulnerable women across Borno State’s 27 local government areas have received financial and food support from the First Lady, Dr. Falmata Babagana Umara Zulum.
Each beneficiary was given N50,000, along with essential food items, including rice, macaroni, and cooking oil.
The total package amounted to N150 million, aimed at alleviating economic hardship and improving the welfare of women in the state.
Speaking at the event on Saturday, Dr. Zulum reaffirmed her commitment to empowering women, aligning with this year’s International Women’s Day theme, “Accelerate Action”.
She stressed the need for urgent steps toward achieving gender equality, highlighting progress in education, healthcare, and economic participation while acknowledging existing challenges.
She also praised the Borno State Government for its continuous support for women’s empowerment.
Dr. Falmata also reiterated her dedication to uplifting women through various initiatives, including skills acquisition training.
While speaking, Hon. Zuwaira Gambo, commissioner of women affairs and social development, commended the leadership of Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum and Dr. Falmata Zulum for their commitment to gender equality.
She encouraged women and girls to recognize their strength and contributions to Borno’s development.
Also at the event, Dr. Zainab Gimba, a member of the House of Representatives, called for a shift in policies to tackle stereotyping, abuse, and cultural discrimination against women.
She emphasized the need for restructuring and repositioning policies that align with global standards to uphold women’s rights.
