A surge in fire incidents has ravaged various communities in Yobe State, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming the lives of three children.
The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA) has recorded a significant increase in fire outbreaks across 15 Local Government Areas (LGAs) since January 2025.
In a statement issued by YOSEMA on Tuesday, the devastating fires have destroyed numerous homes, businesses, and public buildings, displacing residents and causing economic hardship.
In one of the most recent incidents, 37 households in Pompomari, Gwange, Malari, Abbari, and Nasarawa (Damaturu LGA) were affected, leaving 76 individuals affected, 7 injured, and 3 children dead.
Key Fire Incidents:
- Sabon Gari, Gulani LGA: 16 households affected, 38 individuals affected, 2 injured (February 2025)
- Kumagannam, Yusufari LGA: 17 households affected, 45 individuals affected, 4 injured (March 2025)
- Tulo-Tulo, Yusufari LGA: 16 households affected, 41 individuals affected, 1 dead (March 2025)
According to the statement, the primary causes of these fires have been identified as electrical faults, careless handling of open flames, gas leaks, bush burning, and improper waste disposal.
In response to the crisis, Governor Mai Mala Buni has directed YOSEMA to provide immediate support to victims, particularly during the Ramadan season.
YOSEMA's Executive Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Goje, has visited the affected areas to assess the situation and coordinate response efforts.
Preventive Measures:
YOSEMA urges residents, community leaders, and authorities to take proactive measures to prevent future fire incidents:
- Fire Safety Awareness: Activate fire safety awareness campaigns in markets, schools, and residential areas.
- Community Fire Safety Committees: Establish committees to oversee prevention efforts.
- Proper Electrical Wiring: Ensure proper electrical wiring in homes and businesses.
- Safe Use of Cooking Gas: Adhere to safe use and storage of cooking gas and flammable materials.
- Restrict Bush Burning: Enforce strict regulations on bush burning and improper waste disposal.
By taking these proactive measures, we can minimize risks and build safer communities in Yobe State.
