Scores of Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists were neutralized in the early hours of Wednesday during a failed attempt to infiltrate the Naval Base at Lake Chad Fish Dam.

According to a statement posted on the official Facebook page of the Nigerian Army said, the attack, which began around 2 a.m., targeted the newly acquired Swamp Boggeys provided by the Borno State Government for clearing waterways in the Lake Chad region.

However, the terrorists met fierce resistance from personnel stationed at the base.

The Nigerian troops, under Operation Hadin Kai, mounted a well-coordinated response involving land, air, and maritime components.

Reinforcements from Baga arrived promptly, engaging the insurgents in a firefight that lasted over two hours.

According to the military, the terrorists were forced to retreat without gaining access to the Swamp Boggeys.

Dozens of insurgents were killed in the exchange, and materials believed to be for improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were recovered at the scene.

While the assault was repelled, the military reported a minimal incursion that led to the destruction of an ambulance and two other vehicles.

Several personnel were wounded in action, though no fatalities have been confirmed as of the time of reporting.

The Nigerian Air Force has since launched follow-up operations to pursue fleeing terrorists along the waterways in an effort to further weaken their capabilities.

The Nigerian military reiterated its commitment to securing the Lake Chad region and eliminating all terrorist threats.
