The Borno State Police Command has intensified enforcement against the illegal covering and removal of vehicle plate numbers across Maiduguri, leading to multiple arrests and vehicle impoundments.

In a statement issued on Friday by the command’s spokesman, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, the operation followed directives from the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, aimed at curbing rising incidents linked to unidentifiable vehicles in the metropolis.

On Thursday, July 17, 2025, around 8:00 p.m., operatives from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Social Vices Unit carried out targeted raids and stop-and-search operations at key locations including Mala Kachalla Roundabout, Borno Express Junction, Horseman Roundabout, West-End Roundabout, and Kasuwan Shanu Junction.

During the exercise, eight vehicles were impounded, and 13 suspects were arrested for various offences.

These ranged from driving without plate numbers and illegally covering plates, to public nuisance activities such as smoking Indian hemp and possession of banned substances.

The impounded vehicles have been transferred to the Central Motor Traffic Department (MTD) for further investigation and necessary action.

The police warned that covering or removing vehicle plate numbers is illegal, hampers law enforcement efforts, and is often associated with criminal intent.

CP Abdulmajid stressed that offenders would face prosecution in accordance with the law.

Residents are advised to display valid and visible number plates at all times and comply fully with traffic regulations.

The command assured that enforcement efforts will continue in order to maintain public safety and order.
