The Borno State House of Assembly has raised alarm over the growing menace of reckless driving by commercial tricycle operators, urging law enforcement agencies to step up action.
During its plenary on Tuesday, lawmakers called on the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Borno State Traffic Management Agency, and the police to strictly enforce existing traffic laws.
The call followed a motion presented by the member representing Jere Constituency, with support from Hon. Maina Mustapha Garbu, Hon. Bukar Modu, and Hon. Yakubu Gambo Kimba.
The lawmakers expressed deep concern over the increasing trend of dangerous and disorderly tricycle operations across the state.
Hon. Pagu Lawan also commended the state government’s efforts to empower youth through transport initiatives, but emphasized the need for regulation.
Speaker Abdulkarim Lawan advocated for the creation of designated parking spaces for tricycles and stronger disciplinary measures within the operators’ unions to curb the threat to public safety.
In a separate development, the Assembly passed a bill establishing two new Colleges of Nursing and Midwifery in Gwoza and Monguno.
The legislation seeks to correct the imbalance in the distribution of tertiary health institutions across Borno’s three senatorial zones and improve access to healthcare education in underserved areas.
The bill’s passage marks a significant step toward strengthening the state’s healthcare system while also addressing educational disparities in the region.
