As part of the 2025 Democracy Day celebrations, the Borno State Government is set to commence the construction of two new specialist and general hospitals in Jere Local Government Area of the state.
It will significantly improve the healthcare access for women, children, and other vulnerable populations.
Governor Babagana Umara Zulum announced the initiative on Thursday, flagging off the construction of a new Borno Orthopaedic Hospital in Goni Kachallari and a new General Hospital in the Kaleri community.
This development is expected to decongest existing tertiary health institutions in Maiduguri and bring critical medical services closer to underserved communities.
The establishment of a new General Hospital in Kaleri is poised to be particularly beneficial for women and children.
By providing comprehensive services such as maternal care, immunizations, and pediatric services at a grassroots level, the facility will reduce the travel time and financial burden on families who currently seek care in the state capital.
This increased accessibility is crucial for reducing maternal and infant mortality rates and ensuring timely medical interventions.
Furthermore, the new Orthopaedic Hospital will address the high demand for specialized care for physical trauma and musculoskeletal conditions, issues that disproportionately affect vulnerable people in the post-conflict region.
This will ensure that victims of accidents and violence have a dedicated facility for treatment and rehabilitation.
He began his Democracy Day activities with a 5:00 a.m. visit to the gynaecology, antenatal, and postnatal wards at the State Specialist Hospital and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, where he donated cash to support female patients.
By launching these hospital projects, the Zulum administration aims to build a more resilient healthcare system that caters directly to the needs of the state's most vulnerable citizens, ensuring that the dividends of democracy translate into tangible improvements in their health and well-being.
